’s signature shark mouth emerges from a Chinese landscape adapted from a late 17th-century vase in The Met collection. The Museum’s porcelain vase—an example of so-called Jingdezhen ware—commemorates a literary gathering in the 1690s at the city of Jingdezhen, a major production center of Chinese ceramics. The original vessel is richly decorated with local sites and figure groups, as well as poems and transcriptions of an essay.
