THE MET ROESEN STILL LIFE BACKPACK

This backpack recalls a lush still life in The Met’s American Wing. Severin Roesen’s (American, b. Prussia, 1816–1872?) exceptionally large Still Life: Flowers and Fruit (1850–55) depicts over a dozen varieties of fresh flowers and fruit—an extravagant assortment enabled by 19th-century improvements in cultivation and shipping. As such, the inclusion of exotic species, such as the pineapple and the pomegranate, alludes to America’s bounty.
